With Spring on the horizon, we’re sure you’ve already created the perfect checklist to freshen up your home. But does that list include an area rug reset? If not, no worries! We’ve put together a few rug cleaning tips to get yours in shape for warmer days.
1. Check the rug’s care label
It’s always best to take a look at the care instructions on the back of your rug before jumping into any home cleaning. Some materials, like jute, are not suitable for wet cleaning. Likewise, your rug may call for professional care only.
If the label doesn’t include any special instructions, do a spot test on an inconspicuous area of the rug to make sure the dyes don’t bleed.
2. Gather your cleaning supplies
No doubt your spring cleaning list will involve spreading out tasks over the course of a few weeks. To make the process easier, set aside the supplies you need to clean your rug. We recommend the following for deep cleaning (unless your rug label says otherwise):
- Mild, dye-free dish soap: Good for cleaning up most stains on area rugs, especially those made from synthetic yarns like polypropylene.
- Water-filled spray bottle: Use in conjunction with detergent.
- Clean white cloth: Along with water and detergent, use your cloth to gently blot away stains from the outer edge inward.
- Sponge: Use this when you’re ready to take the rug out for a wash.
- Baking soda: Use to deodorize your rug. To make your own scented deodorizer, add 10 – 15 drops of your favorite essential oil. Alternatively, you can purchase pre-scented baking soda for carpets. Sprinkle all over the rug, leave on for 15 minutes, and then vacuum.
- White vinegar: Great for cleaning spills that carry an odor. Mix with warm water and detergent to remove stains.
3. Vacuum
Before starting any wet cleaning, vacuum the rug thoroughly to clear away any dust and debris that may be hidden between the fibers. Always make sure to have the beater bar or brush turned off first. This will ensure fibers don’t accidentally get snagged.
4. Bring the rug outside for deep cleaning
To get the most thorough clean, you’ll want to take the rug outside and give it a proper wash. All you need for this portion is a sponge, your dye-free dish soap, and either a hose or buckets of water. Check out our guide to cleaning rugs at home for an in-depth look at how to care for yours.
5. Clean the rug pad
Although your rug pad spends most of its life hidden under the rug, pockets of dust, crumbs, and hair can sometimes get pushed onto them from vacuuming and general use. If you have a standard waffle-style pad, take it outside and give it a good shake to get rid of debris. Be sure to vacuum the floor before you put it back in its place.
If you own one of our premium rug pads, vacuum the surface after you’ve moved the rug.
Congratulations! With these cleaning tips in mind, you’ll be starting Spring off with fresh rugs to fit your newly cleaned home.
